Designers, Creators, Videographers, Photographers - this one is for you!
I have put together this short video about how I approach a design project. This might be a personal project, a brief from a client if you are freelance, a brief with a deadline in industry or a collaboration for some modelling/photography/videography when travelling. You name it - I have done it!
With all this design knowledge and knowing that we all one started with the same questions and perhaps little know how, I bring to you in this video a few top tips about how I execute a project to completion on time, with focus and deliver more than asked for by the client. Allow me to explain to you about how YOU should approach a brief with the right 'Design Mindset'.
Eliminate distractions, have a creative clear creative space, my top productivity hacks and more! I hope these tips help you. I have written a short article to go along with this video to help you complete your next project in the link below.

Thanks for watching as always - Mahalo! Rose xoxo
Alongside the launch of my Design Mindset Youtube video, I wanted to break down a few things that I felt were important to do before you start a new project from the video. Lets get started!
I want to express the importance of having a space at home, that is like a sanctuary. A place where you can just be. A place that drives inspiration but also breathes space, without the clutter. Like the space in my video! Your creative space and mind before you start a project should be clear, to allow for inspiration to flow naturally with little distractions. You need a tidy space.
I take five minutes before I sit down to create, to tidy my physical space but also tidy my mind! Breathe - meditate. Let any passing thoughts dissolve in this meditation for a few moments and when your done, you have a clear mind to create and a clear space.
The second tip into having the right design mindset to help complete a project at complete ease is to research before you start. This is one of my favourite things to do and is essential. The question is, why wouldn’t you want to flick through magazines, moodboard and scroll through Pinterest for a few hours!?
Knowledge is power, and you need a good amount of research backing your project and supporting you work to inspire you. I dedicated a whole week this week, to reading, studying and grabbing visuals aids, for a weekend of full creativity ready to create the next collection on my Etsy. Research makes a final piece of work better and it grows your imagination and broadens your visual mind.
My third tip for aiding the right Design Mindset to help complete a project is this - eliminate distractions.
Through all the dings, bings and notifications it is easier more than ever to loose focus of your natural flow and become distracted. In my creative space, you won’t find house bills on the table, laundry on the chair or even a computer right now! Where I draw and create is free of all distractions - no checking emails during drawing time. My phone goes on silent, under my drawing stand and sometimes even on aeroplane mode…… sorry fam and friends…..
My creative space is free from ALL distractions. Self discipline is another talent to master and my fourth Design Mindset tip. If you find being on your phone is your main reason for distraction, SET A TIMER - My top hack!!! Hop on your phone, set a 5 minute timer and then when it goes off, that’s it! Be strict - your future creative self will thank you for it.
Rolling into tip number five - Create a wall of visual aids to inspire you. After doing your research, you will have probably gathered together some great images and finds that will inspire you. Now bring everything together before you start your final piece and create a visual physical creative space. Maybe a moodboard? Scrapbook? A file of found items to continue that natural creative flow, whilst you work to refer to. Your research will help you stay on track when developing your ideas in the next stage of the creative process. Fresh images and findings brought together may even trigger new ideas and new projects
I even put up pictures of my own work on my board and am my OWN inspiration - this helps me to create a clear collection of works all running with the same theme and it feels great to have my work up some where I can see it! A visual achievement on my wall!
These are just a few things that will help you with being in the right Design Mindset in order to complete a project. Watch my video in full to hear all my tips about your Design Mindset to help you complete a project.

Rolling around Maui, dropping on each break, watching waves, being picky about each break, because we can. Busy just doing nothing. Only time on our hands, the food in our packs and the boards in the sand. These are the moments were inspiration is born. Time is our friend here, in the golden light of the Hawaiian sunset.
- oahu -
Oahu - the city at night. The air turns cool, the city speaks at night with the sound of tree frogs and insects. The air is humid, but warm. Wrapped up in the Conscious Shift Cropped Sweatshirt. Flashing lights. Reflection on the day you had and what tomorrow brings.
- KAUI & Oahu -
As wild as its waters, Kauai known as the garden island. Surrounding you with greenery, red soil and quiet. Waterfalls cascade from the sky. The Earth here is lush and rich with life. Wearing the Conscious Shift Tee on my travels up Waimea Canyon.
What’s the rush? Why are we all so busy? One thing I learnt, particularly in Kauai, is to slow down. Remember to the importance of what it is to slow down. Take note, reflect. Take moments for yourself. Take a day to get inspired and come back stronger with fresh air in your lungs, mud on your boots and a satisfied adventurous mind. This is what today was, with a few extra polaroids to add to my Travel Journal.
This notebook - a very well travelled part of me, my thoughts, adventures, captured moments in time, stills from all over the world and everlasting inspiration for my art at home. View my journal, as I open its pages this weekend on my YouTube. See all of its pages on video and indulge in my stories from all over the world.
Introducing a new collection to my Etsy Shop - The New Moon Collection. I have been quietly working away on these pieces over the summer and felt that after the New Moon in Scorpio, I suddenly had a name for the collection and coincedentally it was the right time to release these pieces into the world. I hope that you like these pieces. View them all on my Etsy via the link below and read about them here in this post.
On the road, travelling across Hawaii. Just my husband and I, our sketchbooks and nothing but time. We were blessed. We learnt lessons. We went back to our roots. With little internet and just each other and the jungle for company. For once time was our friend. I kept a journal on our travels, reflecting and capturing each moment in my journal of all the amazing things we discovered when travelling across Oahu, Maui and finally Kauai. Mother Earth is one beautiful place. I saw things that my mind could not have dreamt. We were totally immersed in the heart of nature. It was overwhelming and hard to not be in the thick of the depths of the jungle everyday now. How I miss it so.....
This is perhaps the most pivotal video I have made to date. I felt feelings I didn't know existed ini Hawaii. Was pushed entirely out of my comfort, repeatedly, with no other options but to strive ahead. Saw things on Mother Earth created in the most abstract out of this world way. Towering green mountains disappearing into clouds, completely untouched and out of reach.
Endless hours of inspiration. Endless hours of time, all ours. Now home, we both reflect on what we have learnt and walk steadily into our creative futures. This video, being a marker of the next chapter. Thank you so much for reading, liking, supporting, subscribing to every thing I do. Your actions make changes, in my life.
Enjoy beautiful Hawaii and watch this space. Hawaii, we will meet again. I will make sure of that. Mahalo.
Following the most incredible time in Hawaii, after a whole lot of thinking and some time off and on doing design I have had time to collect my thoughts and reflect on my work. After time on and then time off, adventures have lead to a new direction in my work. I have been making a travel diary for over a year now and it really is thickening up. From Biarritz, to LA, Oahu, Maui to Kauai back to the United Kingdom. I am opening my sketchbook up to you. It is my diary, my inspiration, my souvenir and my future. It the beginning of new adventures and memories of old ones too. A book of inspiration for new projects from all over the world.
Over the course of the next year, there will be a clear change in my practice and work. I endeavour to forever post with immense purpose and waste no time. At all.
My website- the hub of my work. My practice is my priority..... and so it is. Join the journey. Soon I will be sharing my journey and new work.
READ FIRST if you will, BEFORE watching.....
The more time I spend slowing down Hawaii, the more I become wise to what’s really important to me. Sometimes, its like people have a filter over their faces in reality and they can’t see the view right in front of them. You see people at these amazing places desperate to get the perfect ‘shot’. The best selfie. Paying so much attention to the temporary, they miss the present moment. They miss the view. I love photography, I love art.
I enjoy capturing a moment with my camera but I love making real memories that aren’t temporary, sharing real moments with people that matter. At a beautiful waterfall I watched a group of people jump in, swim where you were not allowed, have someone record there time in the water. They came, they swam, they left. Took no time to absorb the beauty of the falls. Many where trying to take photos of the fall, but couldn’t because this group were in the water.
They missed the moment and bacteria in the water meant that they weren’t supposed to swim anyway. You look around and a lot of people are on their phones at dinner, by the beach. Remember your roots. Remember what’s important. For me that’s making real memories, precious time with my husband, my family, my dog and Art. Don’t forget to be here now and what’s important.
What are your thoughts? I would love to know.
