Designers, Creators, Videographers, Photographers - this one is for you!
I have put together this short video about how I approach a design project. This might be a personal project, a brief from a client if you are freelance, a brief with a deadline in industry or a collaboration for some modelling/photography/videography when travelling. You name it - I have done it!
With all this design knowledge and knowing that we all one started with the same questions and perhaps little know how, I bring to you in this video a few top tips about how I execute a project to completion on time, with focus and deliver more than asked for by the client. Allow me to explain to you about how YOU should approach a brief with the right 'Design Mindset'.
Eliminate distractions, have a creative clear creative space, my top productivity hacks and more! I hope these tips help you. I have written a short article to go along with this video to help you complete your next project in the link below.
Please subscribe if you like what I do and look out for E Books and Courses on my website soon to help anyone and everyone working in design. Keep on designing!
Thanks for watching as always - Mahalo! Rose xoxo
Alongside the launch of my Design Mindset Youtube video, I wanted to break down a few things that I felt were important to do before you start a new project from the video. Lets get started!
I want to express the importance of having a space at home, that is like a sanctuary. A place where you can just be. A place that drives inspiration but also breathes space, without the clutter. Like the space in my video! Your creative space and mind before you start a project should be clear, to allow for inspiration to flow naturally with little distractions. You need a tidy space.
I take five minutes before I sit down to create, to tidy my physical space but also tidy my mind! Breathe - meditate. Let any passing thoughts dissolve in this meditation for a few moments and when your done, you have a clear mind to create and a clear space.
The second tip into having the right design mindset to help complete a project at complete ease is to research before you start. This is one of my favourite things to do and is essential. The question is, why wouldn’t you want to flick through magazines, moodboard and scroll through Pinterest for a few hours!?
Knowledge is power, and you need a good amount of research backing your project and supporting you work to inspire you. I dedicated a whole week this week, to reading, studying and grabbing visuals aids, for a weekend of full creativity ready to create the next collection on my Etsy. Research makes a final piece of work better and it grows your imagination and broadens your visual mind.
My third tip for aiding the right Design Mindset to help complete a project is this - eliminate distractions.
Through all the dings, bings and notifications it is easier more than ever to loose focus of your natural flow and become distracted. In my creative space, you won’t find house bills on the table, laundry on the chair or even a computer right now! Where I draw and create is free of all distractions - no checking emails during drawing time. My phone goes on silent, under my drawing stand and sometimes even on aeroplane mode…… sorry fam and friends…..
My creative space is free from ALL distractions. Self discipline is another talent to master and my fourth Design Mindset tip. If you find being on your phone is your main reason for distraction, SET A TIMER - My top hack!!! Hop on your phone, set a 5 minute timer and then when it goes off, that’s it! Be strict - your future creative self will thank you for it.
Rolling into tip number five - Create a wall of visual aids to inspire you. After doing your research, you will have probably gathered together some great images and finds that will inspire you. Now bring everything together before you start your final piece and create a visual physical creative space. Maybe a moodboard? Scrapbook? A file of found items to continue that natural creative flow, whilst you work to refer to. Your research will help you stay on track when developing your ideas in the next stage of the creative process. Fresh images and findings brought together may even trigger new ideas and new projects
I even put up pictures of my own work on my board and am my OWN inspiration - this helps me to create a clear collection of works all running with the same theme and it feels great to have my work up some where I can see it! A visual achievement on my wall!
These are just a few things that will help you with being in the right Design Mindset in order to complete a project. Watch my video in full to hear all my tips about your Design Mindset to help you complete a project.
